SciDetect: Software for Evaluating Academic Papers

Universite Joseph Fourier Springer-Verlag GmbH

SciDetect is a collaboration between Springer-Verlag GmbH and Université Joseph Fourier

SciDetect is an open source software program for evaluating academic papers. The software discovers text that has been generated with the SCIgen computer program and other fake-paper generators like Mathgen and Physgen.

SciDetect scans Extensible Markup Language (XML) and Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files and compares them against a corpus of fake scientific papers.

Using intertextual distance, SciDetect can discover any automatically generated text materials and indicate whether an entire document or its parts are genuine or not. The software relies on sensitivity thresholds to report suspicious activity.SciDetect is publicly released under the GNU General Public License (GPL), Version 3.0.

ICDE » New research on adult learners in European higher education

A new report on adult learners in higher education shows that courses offered at a distance are liberating and a crucial route to new qualifications. It also shows that higher education institutions need to be aware of learners’ needs and to meet them through support. Institutions should work harder to recognize prior and informal learning, and better communicate information on available financial support, argue the authors.

The research comes from a project led by ICDE which surveyed over 1,700 students. The IDEAL project seeks to gain a better understanding of the distance education offered by higher education institutions, and to examine how higher education institutions can contribute to adult learning through distance education.

EDEN Conference 9-12 jun 2015 Barcelona – Expanding Learning Scenarios

Complex Changes, Accelerated Transformations

The landscape of learning in the past few years has been changing substantially.

The ever-improving performance of mobile devices and the development of networking infrastructure continue to increase the appeal of new powerful instruments. The rapid spread of technologies, reflected in their untameable demand and use, the momentous development of research as well as practices inevitably transform the information society – mostly outside of institutional settings and often along unexpected pathways.

Whilst there is growing public interest and high demand worldwide for knowledge and education, and intensive social media movements are experienced both on the provider and user communities’ side, the issue of skills deficit is contributing to the critical public approach.
